I was recently asked by Playground Dad to do a holiday gift review of a three-pak of Lil’ Teammates, the new collectible toy from Party Animal. If you’ve never seen them, Lil’ Teammates are- for lack of a better word-cute, well-made, 3″, officially-licensed, action sports figurines.
Full disclosure: I was asked to review these, and I agreed to review, but did so before doing my homework. I assumed it was a toy meant for children, but after the box arrived, and I checked out the “About Us” page at www.LilTeammates.com, I learned that they’re also targeting…me. Yep, a former collector of baseball cards and Starting Lineups (and by former I mean, I still buy a pack of cards from Target every other trip) – the folks at Party Animal know exactly who their target audience is.
First impression: Again, cute. This pack contained three angry white men. Impressive packaging. Apathy (kidding…to be fair, I asked for Carolina Panthers set and was told that they don’t have that yet…so I settled for the Skins and the fact that, probably justifiably so, the Panthers aren’t necessarily relevant on a national scale). These figurines were secured to the packaging with the now ubiquitous back plastic plate and twist-ties. Can we please propose legislation to do away with this stuff? It takes forever, ticks you off and it’s ruined many a holiday season and birthday party. OK, I’m done with the packaging.
The kids’ response: I have an almost four-year-old and a two-and-a-half-year-old. Both boys. They loved them. See below for racy topless photos. As is typical with most toys for kids that age, they went through following stages in their first 10 minutes out of the packaging:
- 1-2:00 – Sheer amazement, love and affection (see pictures)
- 2-4:00 – fight over toys
- 4-6:00 – interest begins to wane
- 6-10:00 – get thrown around the house, under the furniture
- 10:00 – completely forgotten, to be rediscovered 10 minutes later
My response: I could easily see these guys as a cool desk ornament for a big fan. If you’re a legit collector, though, this is a pretty big box to start hoard- I mean, storing. Having been down this road already with my better half (wife: 2,318 and counting, Jake: 0), I will likely pass on this as a collectible, but I could see a huge Skins fan loving these (or any of the other 21 teams, see below).
Final thoughts: As mentioned previously, for adults into collectibles, I can see these things sticking. As a toy/collectible for kids, I think they have legs too. I just wonder at what age this might cause more questions than enjoyment. Take this Redskins package for example. The current Washington Redskins QB is Robert Griffin III. The “quarterback” in this set does not look like Robert Griffin III.
Overall, these Lil’ Teammates are great collectibles that have the potential to make both young kids and young dads at heart happy. They would make for a great gift for your favorite lil’ (or big) sports fan this holiday season!
