REVIEW: Operation Math Code Squad

When Playground Dad asked if anyone would like to review a Math App for kids, I eagerly jumped to the task.  Having a resident math genius in my house (my 10 year old son) I knew that together we would be able to review the app and have a little fun with it.

Operation Math Code Squad is a math game that puts you as an agent trying to foil Dr. Odd’s evil plan by solving math problems and defusing the bomb.  The good thing is that you don’t have to do it alone and can invite up to 3 other people to help you defuse the bomb before time runs out making it a 4 player cooperative frenzy.

Great 4 Player Fun!

When you start the game you’ll choose from a combination of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. After you choose that you’ll get to choose the difficulty level which are Easy, Medium, or Difficult.  Each level you have 75 equations to solve but are broken up into 7, 11, 15, 19, and 23 question stages.  Each stage you have 60 to solve the problems that are displayed on a rotating circle in the middle of the iPad. If time runs out before the team answers all the problems in a stage, the bomb blows up.  Also too many wrong answers by an agent disconnects their keypad from the bomb and they will not be able to help out until the next stage.

While playing with my son, it started out as a cooperative effort but as we defused the first bomb and the rankings came out it was clear that now it was going to be a race to answer before the other person.  So Operation Math Code also encourages competitive play as well.

Rankings after defusing the bomb makes for some competitive play.

Pros:

  • Easy to jump right in and play
  • Easy for everyone to read the problem with rotating interface
  • Competitive and Cooperative fun

Cons:

  • Very Repetitive
  • Clear and Enter buttons are too small
  • Needs to add something other than defusing bombs

Overall I thought Operation Math Code Squad App for iPad was a lot of fun, even adults will love to play this game with their kids.  If you have a couple of kids around the same age, this is a great app to keep their minds sharp while also competing against each other.

I give the Operation Math Code Squad App for iPad 4 1/2 out of 5 PlaygroundDad Thumbs up.
