Finding Beauty in Kid Friendly iPhone Apps

By now the iPhone app store has become a crowded place with lots and lots of content. This content usually ranges from mediocre to truly bad. As many dads have experienced, the iPhone has become a primary device to keep kids engaged when in the car or in desperate need of  a few kid-free minutes. With the steaming pile of content that lives on the app store, Playground Dad wants to assist busy dads by highlighting some of the truly cool apps that are out there.tickle-tap

Some of our new favorites are the Tickle Tap Apps from the folks at zinc Roe Design (http://www.zincroe.com/). We downloaded the Count Caddy and Sound Shaker apps.  Count Caddy is a simple format where kids pull objects into a circle to work on their counting skills. The Sound Shaker application lets kids pick from a group of objects and musical instruments that they bring into an open environment to experiment with sounds, shapes and movement.

We found many iPhone apps for kids to be wildly loud and obnoxious. These apps won’t make you want to pull your hair out. What stands out about these mini games are their simple and elegant creative direction. The design is absolutely flawless and kids don’t get overwhelmed by gratuitous bells and whistles. The uncomplicated, yet powerful design allows young preschool aged kids to feel in total control and not get bogged down with too many options. It’s obvious that these games were not built by a company looking to quickly profit off of the growing kids market; they are built from the ground up with toddlers/preschoolers in mind from the jump. We really appreciate that and so will your kids.

Count Caddy and Sound Shaker are available for $1.99 on the iTunes app Store. For more information on Tickle Tap apps, click here: http://www.tickletapapps.com/

  • Thanks for following me on Twitter and thereby leading me to your website. Regarding iPhone apps for children I reviewed quite a lot last summer in relation to outdoor activities. This was with teachers in mind but it may be of interest to some of your readers. Have a look at my posts during August 2009.

    Best wishes

  • Thanks for the great review. We worked very hard to create apps that parents will be happy to share with their kids.

Sir Roly Poly from Ryan Green at http://www.weelittlegamer.com/ is a nice little game also. At only 99 cents it's a great buy!
