My Daughter, The Ebay Mogul

As I mentioned recently, my 10 year old daughter was inspired by a great book called Invest This Dollar. It’s a cool book that gives kids 50 ideas of companies they can start.

We decided to take her love of reading and our dislike of clutter and get her setup on Ebay – to sell some of the books that she has already read…with hopes of teaching her some basic business skills as well.

Well, she embarked on her journey this week by posting her first batch of books on Ebay through my account.

I have to say the game changer in this process is the Ebay iPad app. If you haven’t played with this yet, it is definitely worth checking out. She was able to scan the ISBN codes on her books and have the book info and photos (in MOST cases) pre-fill so she was able to post her first 11 books very quickly. It’s not often that she uses the iPad for anything other than games and Netflix, so she was excited to see that the device was more than an entertainment provider for kids. She had lots of fun getting her new business off the ground.

If you’re interested in checking out the Invest this Dollar book for kids, check it out here.

Love the entrepreneurial spirit. I wonder if my four year old could grasp the ebay concept? ;-)

It is good to see these kinds of things where we teach our kids financial skills rather than just giving them what they want, when they want it. I suspect there is a generation of children who have been given everything they want, without realising that there are sacrifices to be made.

I’ll have to look into the Invest this Dollar book.

The book sound interesting. The app sounds like a must as well for Ebayer’s. I’ve often found the pain of listing items is in the details. I have plenty to sell if this app can make the processes easier. Neat!

This is great. My oldest daughter is about to turn 5 and she has a bank account at Navy Federal Credit Union. She’s already pretty smart on money and can negotiate with me. It’s actually pretty amazing.

One of my primary goals is to get both of my daughters to be financially independent. I will definitely check out the book you recommended. Thanks, Mike.

As for the ipad app, I’ll have to check it out. I’ve been an ebay-er for about 10 years, but this looks cool.

The average dad spends about 6 hours a week with his kids. That’s not perfect, but today’s dads are doing better than the previous generation. PlaygroundDad.com is for the dads who dare to make the most of these 6 sacred hours–no smart phones; no conference calls–just quality time.

Playground Dad connects this new generation of fathers with the events and products that help them spend better time with their newborn to grade school aged kids.
