My Child’s Admiration: A Father seeks true Role-Models

As a father, I am often saddened by the lack of positive role-models.  This is a conversation I have had with many fathers and mothers. Our current media age makes this process harder because we do not often hear the stories that provide examples of courage, strength, fortitude, love, and hope from role-models.  In the age of Honey Boo Boo, I was losing hope.

Today while watching Sports Center on ESPN, I was happy to be introduced to a man who is worthy of the title “Role-Model” or “Hero”.  During this time, when there are so many things wrong within professional sports, it is refreshing to hear a story and meet an athlete that is worthy of my 5-year-old daughter’s admiration.

O.J. Brigance is a Baltimore Raven, a hero, a role-model, and has lived with ALS for the past fiver years and beating the odds.  According to the ALS Association, nearly 5600 a year, in the United States, are diagnosed with ALS.

Have you found positive role-models for your children?  Share with us in the responses below, and let me introduce you to one I found:  Meet O.J. Brigance.

Parents are the perfect role-models for children. Be who you want your child to be. Live healthy and chances are your child will too.

Seconded–the parent is first and foremost the role model for their children. If people in the media aren’t worthy of your child’s admiration, it’s time to shut it down and spend more one-on-one so your kids see how you live life/treat people.

      • Our Mission

The average dad spends about 6 hours a week with his kids. That’s not perfect, but today’s dads are doing better than the previous generation. PlaygroundDad.com is for the dads who dare to make the most of these 6 sacred hours–no smart phones; no conference calls–just quality time.

Playground Dad connects this new generation of fathers with the events and products that help them spend better time with their newborn to grade school aged kids.
