Full disclosure: Over the years, I’ve never been a huge fan of Valentine’s Day. It feels like a Hallmark invented holiday that does more to make single people feel alienated than it does to actually bring loved ones together.
With that said, the older I get, it’s fun to see the kids create little cards for each other and just get excited about it, because kids seem to get excited about any event. So, as a dad and like MANY things in my life, I’m semi rejuvenated on the day because of the kids. I’m back on board.
So now that it’s only a week away, here are some quick ways to tell your wife or partner, “I love you”.
1. Create the Home Date Night
The home date night is probably one of my favorite things in the world. It’s inexpensive; you don’t need a babysitter. You can cook together and 9 time’s out of 10, you end up actually talking more than you would on a traditional night out. You have plenty of time to plan one of these now. Make a menu, plan on getting the kids to bed on time, maybe throw together a couple songs on your ipod and Boom: Date night in a Box. Happy Valentine’s Day.
2. Get them a gift to help inspire that New Year’s resolution
The timing for Valentine’s Day is perfect in the fact that many of those New Year’s resolutions are probably starting to fade away. Now’s the best time to give a gift that help’s them get back on track. If they wanted to shed a few pounds; get them some cool work out gear. They were looking to read more? Get them a cool new best seller or load up their e-reader with a couple books.
Money is always tight this period of the year between the end of the holidays and tax time, so head over to Ebay and make some sells and look for some inexpensive gifts. That way, you’re helping to get rid of some of the clutter you’ve been meaning to sell since January, and you’re getting the wife a great gift: De-cluttering and watching the family’s bottom line: Win/win.
3. Plan a quick inexpensive getaway
If you can swing it, a quick trip away from everything can be the perfect gift. Can the grandparents take the kids for a night? Might be worth it. Or better yet, you can win a getaway. Our friend’s at the awesome (and dog friendly) Del Marcos Hotel in Palm Springs are giving away a 2 night stay…for free. That would be a nice way to spend v-day wouldn’t it? You can enter here: Win 2 Free Nights at the Del Marcos Hotel.
4. Make Dessert
Simple little detail. Couples that eat dessert together, stay together. Find a fun dessert recipe. Make it. Eat it together. Live happily ever after.
5. Show up at work
Now this will win you some serious points. This is like “they only do that on TV” good. If you can make it happen, take your lunch break and head over to your loved one’s office with some flowers. You will be rememebered for doing that well beyond V-day. You will be the talk of the town. They will throw you a parade, like you’ve won a Super Bowl.
You didn’t know that Playground Dad was so romantic, huh? Good luck and enjoy the day.Powered by Sidelines
