Geeking Out Over Mila

I want to share a few pseudo geeky-techy stuff I have been doing lately as fun ways to document our daughter’s life.

Email

I came across this amazing idea in a post from Patrick Rhone. He got it from this post on the Static Made blog.

For the past five years, I’ve been writing emails to my son. Shortly after he was born in 2007, I created an email account in his name so I could write to him throughout his childhood and then turn the account over to him when he was of age. Upon opening the account for the first time, he’d be greeted with an archive of his childhood as seen through his father’s eyes.

The only wrinkle I added to this idea was to share Mila’s email with family so they could also email her.

DayOne

I heard about the DayOne app about a year ago and downloaded it but didn’t really start using it until a recent major update. The app is now one of my favorites. They call it a journaling app but its much more. You can certainly use it to keep a detailed journal but I like to think of the app as “social media for one”. You can check in at locations, add pictures and automatically add the weather. It can be backed up and archived also. I use both the iPhone/iPad app and the Mac app. The main thing I used it for over the past few months was to document Natalie’s pregnancy. Lately, I have been using the email feature to send journal entries about Mila to her email account.

Website

Who knows what the web will be like in 20 years but wouldn’t it be nice to have your web domain? Even if you don’t know what to do with it, owning your name could be useful one day. When we decided on the names for our baby I went online and bought the domains. We ended up having Mila so milabrock.com will be renewed. When I decided to do this it wasn’t to actually do anything other than have it for her when she was older in case she ever wanted it. However, we decided we would use it to publish pics of Mila rather than loading albums into Facebook or other online tools. I used Squarespace to create the simple site because I could do it in about 30 minutes and I was familiar with Squarespace since it is what I use for this site. Anyway, will still plan to let Mila have milabrock.com whenever she is old enough to do anything with it. The great part is Natalie and I can still have everything I created at the current site even when Mila takes her domain.

EveryDay

The EveryDay App is a photo app but with a unique feature. It curates a photos of your face into a “movie”. I am using it to take a picture of Mila everyday. Obviously, I don’t have a ton of pics yet to make the “movie” seem useful but it will be fun to see how it turns out.

The average dad spends about 6 hours a week with his kids. That’s not perfect, but today’s dads are doing better than the previous generation. PlaygroundDad.com is for the dads who dare to make the most of these 6 sacred hours–no smart phones; no conference calls–just quality time.

Playground Dad connects this new generation of fathers with the events and products that help them spend better time with their newborn to grade school aged kids.
