Enhancing Relationships with Technology

Maybe it’s the fact that we have two daughters but I’m a sucker for emotional commercials especially when they feature dads and daughters. Recently, the commercial for Google Chrome titled “Jess Time” brought tears to my eyes. It tells the story of a daughter at college connecting with her dad over video chat.

Technology can be a tool to distract us from what’s really important but it can also be a powerful tool of human connection. Grandparents can see their grandchildren hundreds of miles away. Parents can wish their children good night or even read to them while on business trips. The world becomes smaller when we can communicate through video chat with those we love but who aren’t geographically close to us.

Sometimes circumstances don’t allow us to be physically close to those we love. My brother and his family are moving to Bangladesh in a week so our kids won’t be able to see each other in person for almost three years. But through the beauty of technology they will be able to see each other on a computer screen even if they spend most of the time making goofy faces at each other.

How do you use technology to enhance your family relationships?

Here’s the powerful new ad for Google Chrome:

Yeah, as a father of 2 girls, this commercial moved me too. My kids get to see their grandparents who live across the country over skype weekly.

First I’m a total sucker for that commercial. Technology was a life saver this time last year for our family. I was deployed to Afghanistan and we lived on Skype. I cannot imagine going through that without the benefits of Skype, Email, Facetime, etc…

Same here…father of two daughters. One of which is moving quickly through the high school years and will be going off to college before I know it. GREAT commercial. Thanks so much for sharing. Technology will continue to advance, yet nothing beats getting that hug for real.

The kids, wife, and I just started becoming more active with video chatting when I’m gone. Thankfully it’s not much. Another way we use technology to become a closer family is to sit and play WITH our little ones when they’re on their electronics, instead of using them as babysitters. It’s not all the time, but playing with opens dialogue, builds relationships, etc. It’s been fun.

The average dad spends about 6 hours a week with his kids. That’s not perfect, but today’s dads are doing better than the previous generation. PlaygroundDad.com is for the dads who dare to make the most of these 6 sacred hours–no smart phones; no conference calls–just quality time.

Playground Dad connects this new generation of fathers with the events and products that help them spend better time with their newborn to grade school aged kids.
