Now that The Avengers is finally here and you’ve been frantically sharing your thoughts from the midnight screening you saw last night, we’re her to remind you that there’s still only one movie franchise that can claim to have started it all. Star Wars day is today and we’d like offer you a hearty May the Fourth be With You and to remind you that every pop culture moment is a teaching moment.
The great Marvel and DC comic book movies of the last dozen years or still haven’t nearly been too much of a threat to Star Wars’ blockbuster/event supremacy. Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings series came close but surely that was only because George Lucas’ second so-called trilogy was running at the same time and more or less stinking up movie houses everywhere. Nonetheless, on an occasion where Earth’s Mightiest Superheroes have become the hottest thing since last summer’s hero movies, explaining to your little ones how we used to do back in the day when Star Wars came out seems like least dad can do.
You really only have two major points to make:
1. There was nothing like Star Wars before it came out. The collective imaginations of the entire world were opened up, stirred and supercharged for an entire generation. Imagining a world beyond the stars is their birthright.
2. It takes a whole bunch of smart people to create something like a movie trilogy. The term nerd was synonymous with “loser” when Star Wars came out. Nowadays it’s beginning to describe a certain level of expertise because all of you Apple-nerds, coffee-nerds and football-nerds have embraced it.
And so with that let’s celebrate and bring The Avengers into the fold of successful and worthy summer blockbusters with a mashed up trailer featuring R2D2 as Iron Man.
